Deforming arthrosis of the elbow joint

A full range of orthopedic services, from diagnosis to full recovery

Arthrosis of the elbow joint is a degenerative-dystrophic disease that leads to the deformation and destruction of its cartilage tissue.

As the process progresses, the joint capsule, bones, and ligamentous apparatus are involved. The cause of cartilage degeneration can be an excessively large load.

Pathological changes can also occur in the cartilage itself, in which case it can be damaged even under normal loads. The cause of changes in the cartilage tissue can be various disorders of the protein metabolism in its composition.

The process can also develop as a consequence of injuries: after an intra-articular fracture, hemorrhage in the joint, partial rupture of capsules and ligaments.

Since the articular cartilage itself has no vessels or nerve endings, its destruction does not cause pain and the first stage of arthrosis passes unnoticed by a person. The cartilage in the process of developing arthrosis becomes loose and lags behind the bone in the form of scales, while the product of the breakdown of cartilage is formed-cartilaginous detritus. Pieces of cartilage, floating in the joint gap and falling between the rubbing surfaces of the joint, like sandpaper, erase the cartilage tissue and the synovial membrane of the joint capsule.

This leads to inflammation of the articular membrane-synovitis. The inflamed shell of the joint produces a large amount of intra-articular fluid, which leads to even greater destruction of the cartilage. With the development of synovitis, the joint swells and becomes hot to the touch, and pain occurs due to damage to the capsule. As the cartilage is destroyed, the bone tissue is exposed from under it, and there is also a violation of blood circulation, which causes unbearable, aching night pain.

During the development of osteoarthritis, bone growths – osteophytes-are formed in the joint. They further deform the joint and restrict mobility in it.

In the clinical picture, so-called "starting pains" are possible, when the pain in the joint increases at the beginning of the movement, and then either disappears or decreases. Pain at the initial stage appears only after the load on the joint, but soon becomes permanent.

Diagnostics

The diagnosis is made after an X-ray examination of the joint. As it forms, there are three stages of the development of deforming arthrosis of the elbow joint:
  1. at the first stage, there is a general narrowing of the articular fissure and a compaction of the subchondral areas of the bone;< / li>
  2. the second stage is characterized by the appearance of bone growths (osteophytes) on the edges of the articular surfaces. In this case, there is a narrowing of the joint gap by two or more times compared to the norm;< / li>
  3. at the last stage, the joint gap is almost invisible, extensive growths (osteophytes) and joint deformity are detected, and there is almost complete loss of mobility.

Treatment

The treatment of osteoarthritis of the elbow joint is similar to the treatment of osteoarthritis of other large joints.

Treatment begins with the appointment of painkillers. Then a person with this type of pathology is prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs at the discretion of the doctor. These medications are required in order to stop the inflammation developing in the joint, and the medications also have an analgesic effect.

Hyaluronic acid is injected directly into the cavity of the painful joint, a good therapeutic effect is achieved in 4 procedures.

The main stage of therapy for arthrosis of the elbow joints is the use of chondroprotectors. This is the name of medicines that help the joint tissue to recover. The composition of the drug chondroprotector includes the active substance glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate, or both substances at once.
